Cell Phone Policy (Revised 12/2016)
St. Gregory the Great School uses instructional technology(laptops, tablets, and ipads) as one way of supporting our mission to teach the skills, knowledge and behaviors students will need as responsible citizens in the global community. Students learn collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking in a variety of ways throughout the school day. In an effort to be proactive with today’s growing social and interactive technology trends, it is our hope that this new policy will increase awareness and training while putting into practice social and professional etiquette relating to electronic devices.
Cell phones in the classroom can be a significant discipline problem and classroom management struggle if clear and explicit guidelines are not established.
A new cell phone policy will be piloted during the second semester of the 2016 – 2017 school year for all students . The program will be assessed at the end of the school year to determine if this program is a viable long term option for St. Gregory the Great School. The use of cellphones during instructional and non-instructional school time (recess, lunch ,between classes or after school) is prohibited. All cell phones brought on the school property must be registered with the school. http://www.stgregorythegreatschoolwhittier.org/forms/2013-2014/cellphone.pdf
Phones must turned in to the homeroom teacher upon entrance to the classroom. Phones should be in the “off” position. Phones may not be used in before/after school daycare. Phones will be returned to student at the end of the school day.
Guidelines: Violating the established policy will result in the following:
• First offense- the phone is taken away until the end of the day.
• Second offense- the phone must be picked up by a parent or guardian.
• Third offense- either the student is suspended for one day or the phone is taken away for five school days (parent’s choice).
• Any further infractions will result in the student not having a cell phone on school grounds during the school day. Furthermore, students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be subjected to other disciplinary actions.
